Dionysios “Dion” Kaskarelis is a husband, father, homeowner, and proud Greek-American running for Councilor-at-Large in Melrose.
Dion became a United States citizen on July 31, 2025 — and just two weeks later pulled papers to run for office. For him, citizenship is not just a legal milestone; it is a responsibility. Running for City Council is a natural step in giving back to the community that welcomed his family.
In May 2023, Dion and his wife, Gloria, moved from Jamaica Plain to Melrose with their son, Leo, and their senior dog, Gustavo. Like many families, they were drawn to Melrose for its strong schools, reliable services, and close-knit neighborhoods. Watching their son grow up here has only deepened Dion’s commitment to the city’s future.
Dion grew up in a foreign service family and lived in nine countries across Europe and the United States by the age of 24. Experiencing different cultures, governments, and communities gave him a global perspective and an appreciation for the role public institutions play in people’s daily lives.
His upbringing was deeply influenced by Greek culture, which emphasizes eleftheria (freedom), demokratia (democracy), filotimo (honor), and filoxenia (hospitality). These values shape his belief that government should serve with integrity, transparency, and respect — and that communities are strongest when they are welcoming and inclusive.
Dion believes public service is about stewardship: protecting what works, improving what doesn’t, and planning responsibly for the next generation.
Dion has over 15 years of experience in international public service, working as an international civil servant at a multilateral development bank.
His work focused on economic diplomacy and investment finance, leading large-scale initiatives across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
That experience strengthened his belief in disciplined financial planning, long-term strategy, and collaboration across differences — skills he believes are essential at the local level as well.
Dion is the founder of a Melrose-based real estate investment firm focused on responsible property ownership and long-term community stability. His work centers on expanding access to real estate while ensuring projects align with neighborhood character and local needs.
As a local business owner, Dion understands how economic policy, regulation, and taxation affect small businesses and families alike. He believes thoughtful development can strengthen the city’s tax base, support local services, and preserve the qualities that make Melrose special.
